The Director is a supporting character, who is found inside the same apartment floor "You" lives in. He is a mysteriously reserved survivor who is staying in a strangely barren apartment room. He claims to be a merchant, but is rather charitable, claiming to have no need for many of the items he finds when he goes out to "forage", subtly indicating that he has "his own ways and means" to survive.

An elderly man living/hiding in room 204. Supplies "You" with the occasional item and will trade flares for bullets. He also enjoys the comic, "Sleepy Cat" (which he finds hilarious), and on their second meeting, he will begin trading tins of cat food for them. "You" grows very attached to The Director, if only because he's the first, and more importantly, most helpful person he meets.

Though appearing inscrutable and shifty, The Director helps "You" by continuously providing several useful items after their initial meeting. The Director seems to have a new item whenever you have had a dream sequence or done something relevant to the main plot. To verify if The Director has a new item, merely tune in on his radio station, 102.5, and you will get a short message relating to the availability of items.

The Director, while preferring to keep their relation strictly professional, never talking about his past, acts very supportive towards "You", in an almost fatherly way and will tell him to "Keep your chin up, kid" and during the first visit says "The world is yours kid, never forget that.".

After "You" finds a way out of the apartment building, The Director comments that he has been thinking about leaving the city and says that this may be the last time they'll meet. Despite this, the Director continues to stay until "You" advances past the bus.

*** SPOILER ***

The Director is killed by Mother at the end of the game, having gone out too far into the city while foraging, according to himself, and is found shortly afterwards by "You", fatally injured. Not wanting to lose the only human contact he has, "You" desperately tries to save The Director's life, begging him to hold through, but with his dying breath, he ushers "You" to the direction of the hospital, to find "her", lamenting the loss of someone dear before finally succumbing to his wounds and expiring. "You" takes the passcode from the Director's hand and promises to get "them" for his death, leaving his body slumped against the wall.

"Specials"[]

The following items are verified as being given to "You" by The Director. Note that some items are only given if you have a good mental health. (Should add note of what items are depending on good mental health.)

Identity?[]

The Director's catchphrase "We're all in this together." is a quote from the Terry Gilliam film "Brazil". "Here's a looking at you, kid" is from "Casablanca", while "The world is yours" is from "Scarface" and the incomplete "Sometimes you eat the bar" being from "The Big Lebowski", the rest of the quote fittingly being "Sometimes the bar eats you". This implies he might be an actual (film/television) director or at least a movie enthusiast, though he claims to have no idea about the origins of his moniker. It should also be noted that "You" is first informed about The Director through a business card, bearing his nickname, describing him as an "acquirer", accompanied by the same radio wave he still uses, suggesting that he bore the name and his role as a trader of sorts prior to the collapse as well.

His last words to "You" heavily imply that he is far more than a friendly stranger to "You", even insinuating himself that he personally knew the very same girl "You" has been seeing, even muttering "I... miss... her... too..." as his last words. This is the only time he uncharacteristically reveals personal information about himself, but he's not able to further go into detail, as he dies of blood loss before "You" can find out more about "her". A radio transmission can also be received after finding his card, simply saying "... I know you...", further point to a familiarity between the two, at least on The Director's part. The drawings on the wall and the chalk scribbles in his apartment seem to support this, as "You" recognizes the depicted girl, who is stylized as an angel or in embrace with an unknown man, as "her". On the other hand, it is also possible that in his fading moments, The Director was referring to a different "her" from his own life, possibly a loved one like a daughter or romantic partner, whom "You" mistakingly thought to be the Girl in the Blue Dress.

Like many characters encountered by "You", the Director never openly comments on the "infection" or the monsters, even taking a dig at his apparent tenuous grip on reality by saying that he may well be a "product of [his] furtive imagination". The Director does come the closest of anyone to questioning "You"'s narrative, when giving him the Moka Pot, when "You" says that he used to drink coffee all the time before the outbreak, to which the Director asks "wait... before what?", though quickly dropping the subject to talk about trading some more.

The Director's name can also be interpreted to have a double meaning, as he both guides you through your survival escapade and his last action is to direct "You" to the hospital.

It is also possible that The Director is The Man Who Wears A Box or at least holds some vague connections with him, as he always seen with the same box on the floor next to him.
